The Power of "Feels Good"
"No pain, no gain." Right?
What if we told you there's actually a lot to be gained from feeling good?
Some amount of stress is both necessary and good, but too much is destructive. The small stresses of exercising, for example, keep muscles and bones strong, but overdoing it can result in prolonged recovery times at the least, and maybe even muscle tears or bone fractures. As we chase the good life we often push ourselves, work too hard, sleep too little, overlooking the kind of growth that can only happen when we're feeling good.
Positive psychology researcher Barbara Frederickson calls it the Broaden and Build theory of human development. When we're relaxed and feeling good we are more likely to respond to new situations with openness and curiosity, which makes it possible to learn new skills and make new friends. Then when we are faced with hard times, and we will be, we have a bigger basket of tools to choose among. Instead of narrow, survival-oriented behaviors, we are free to choose more expansive perspectives and a more thoughtful approach to living.
One hallmark of Zero Balancing is how good it feels. As ZB practitioners we get to see the effects of feeling good every day. The client who arrives with eyes dulled by stress or pain leaves with a sparkle and a spring in her step. The person who is trapped by a narrow perception of himself discovers new depths and ways of being. On the ZB table, we see stresses dissipate, we see nervous systems relax, and we see people becoming more and more who they truly are.
